Weekly Devotional

  Men of God,

This devotional came to me on email the other day and I thought it fit well for the J-squad team.  We are able to pray with faith (and therefore power) when we remember what God has done for us in the past and when we are centered on God.  Pray for each of the men on the list that they will remember what God has done for them and that they will be centered on Jesus.

“You shall remember all the way the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. He humbled you and let you be hungry and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:2-3, NASB).

Moses reminded the people of the exodus that their receiving of God’s bread was to humble them and test them to see if they would obey God. Hunger was God’s humbling of His people. Hunger was the test in terrible adversity. If God remained their center during trial, God would provide. However, if the need became the center, then the need would be the god—and that was to replace the true God with a false one, a violation of the first commandment.

In the Lord’s Prayer, we begin with God. We move to invite God’s power and kingly rule to take first place in our lives and through us on earth. Then and only then, we bring our needs to Him, to ensure that we can get the work done that needs to be accomplished. Needs, even something as basic as bread, take second place to God’s rule.
